FAQ

What is a virtual book fair?

A virtual book fair is an online gathering of authors and readers to support the art of writing and encourage reading. Our Own Write’s book fair was created specifically to support authors affected by the current worldwide pandemic, as in-person book tours, fairs, and events have been cancelled or postponed.

What is the format of the virtual book fair?

Every 30 minutes, a new author will go live on Twitter, per the published schedule. Each author will spend 10 minutes reading an excerpt from their book, and another 15 minutes answering questions and chatting with their readers. (The leftover 5 minutes allows everyone to head on over to the next live author.)

Where does the virtual book fair take place?

The virtual book fair will take place on each author’s Twitter account via Twitter Live.

Why are the July virtual book fairs only open to Black authors?

Because we demand diversity in the Arts.

Black representation in the publishing industry is rare—like, only 5% rare—and that is unacceptable. Our goal every July is to raise awareness for Black authors and make room for them in the publishing industry. Their voices deserve to be heard, and we want to hear them. We want our followers to hear them.

If you have concerns or questions about this decision, we would love to hear from you.

Is the virtual book fair only on Twitter?

Yes. As of right now, Our Own Write’s virtual book fair only takes place on Twitter.

How do I watch Twitter Live?

To view live Twitter broadcasts, you must have a Twitter account. You can either visit the author’s Twitter profile to start viewing, or follow them before the event and receive a notification at the top of your Home screen once they start broadcasting. (View our author list to find and follow your favorites ahead of time!)

If the author chooses to save their live stream, you will be able to watch it after, from any device.

How do I start a live Twitter broadcast?

From the Twitter app, simply compose a Tweet, click the camera icon, and select the LIVE option. You will have time to adjust your frame and relocate before you go live—it does not instantly start live streaming.

You will have to give the Twitter app permission to use your microphone and camera before broadcasting. If you haven’t done this already, you may not see the LIVE option; you will need to give the app permission before you can live stream. Our video will show you how to give Twitter the proper permission. Please contact us if you are having trouble with your live stream.

(Note: If you decide to join the virtual book fair, know the we offer robust tips and support to help you with choosing your excerpt and broadcasting on Twitter.)

Who can participate?

Any author from any genre and country with a published book is encouraged to participate.

What if I have a finished manuscript, but it’s not yet published?

While Our Own Write supports authors at every stage of the writing and publishing processes, our virtual book fair is designed to support those authors who are seeing a loss of income because of the current pandemic. As soon as your manuscript is published, please sign up for our next virtual book fair. We would love to hear your work!

How much does it cost?

Our virtual book is free for everyone—authors and readers alike.
